SILK HATS AMD FREE FISH
DELUSION" OF THE SEA ELEPHANT
AT THE ZOO. The sea elephant at the London Zoo has lost its faith in silk hats. It came about in this way. A middle-aged city stockbroker who loves to make friends with the animals has been in the habit of feeding the sea elephcoit with sprats almost daily. It formed a strong attachment for him. " At his coming it would splash, grunt, curvet, wriggle and dire after the manner of its kind, and would devour the sprats with a generous display of sea-elephantine gratitude But. for several days the stockbroker did not visit the Zoo. The keepers noticed tha« whenever anyone wearing a silk hat —the broker always wore one at the Zoostopped at the tank the creature would grow effusively demonstrative. When no sprats followed it would look reproachfully at. the wearer of the hat, and renew its performance with redoubled energy. It was a long time before it lost its faith in silk hats, but now it knows' that tender sprats do not grow in shining headgear, and it sulks in ita tank. •
