BIG SMUGGLING SCHEME.

LADIES AND THEIR DRESSES.

By Telegraph.—Press Association—Copyright.

(Received December 12. 11.15 p.m.) New York, December 12. The Federal authorities have discovered a smuggling conspiracy which it is alleged has been in operation for several years, and by means of which ladies' dresses to the value of a million dollars (£200,000) have been introduced through Canada without the payment of Customs duties.

A woman named Mrs. Haldern has been arrested on a charge of smuggling gowns for other women and declaring that they were for her own use.
