POLITICS AND PLAY, Every student of history remembers how England's fate once hung in the balance whilo Sir Francis Drake and other great sea captains contested a game of bowls. Although the fate of a nation hinged not on the earnest attention of players in a game played yeserday. yet the result* if taken seriously, would undoubtedly have made New Zealand history. Ever .since the Greater Auckland scheme was mooted there has been keen rivalry between borough and city councillors, and yesterday the councillors of the city and Grey Lynn, borough councillors decidod to settle all differences with tho aid of "kitty." and the biassed sphere. Rinks comprising the Mayor of Grev Lvuu (Mr. George Baildon) and Councillors 11, Schofleld, F. .Parsons, and C. .Norgrove, met City Councillors M. Casey, E. T. Michaels, J. M. Mennic. and F. E. N. Gaudin on tho Auckland green, the issue at stake being whether Grey Lynn amalgamates with Auckland or Auckland amalgamates with Grey . Lynn. Keen interest was taken m the match, supporters of the rival parties mustering in great force, (skipped liv the "Kfnvor the borough team played with, great determination! and although the city councillors tried hard to save their city, victory rested with the borough by one point, rhe scores were Grey Lynn 18, Auckland 17.
