BAKERS DISPUTE SETTLED
MEN'S DEMANDS CONCEDED.
DOUBLE TIME FOR NIGHT WORK.
\ ' "■■ The threatened strike by operative bakers in Auckland has been, averted by the decision of the employers concerned to concede the demands of" the men. They have
made this concession under protest as a moans of avoiding the dislocation of their businesses, and it is probable that the matter will be brought before the Arbitration Court ajfain for further consideration. The dispute arose from the dislike of the workmen to the continuance of the night shift system. By the award of November 18 payment 'at double the ordinary rates was fixed for this work, but provision was made by the Arbitration Court for night shift work to bo continued for not, more than six months m those factories where the system was in operation when the award was made, the rate of pay fixed being slightly higher than for dav" work. Last Monday notice was given by the Operative Bakers and Pastrycooks' Union that fight work should be '.discontinued immediately, and subsequently it notified the employers that unless its' request was met the men would cease work to-morrow. The threat to strike secured the effect desired bv the men. The permissive clause inserted by the Court is to be virtually ignored, and the firms who require their men to work between 10 p.m. and four a.m. have undertaken to pay double rates. They propose to avoid night work as far as possible, until their arrangements are completed to enable them to employ men on the day shift only. The, operatives, on their part, have allowed their claim for/double pay for night work during the past fortnight to stand in afegyancp.
