DETECTING WEEDS.
A HELP TO FARMERS.
To be able to detect the presence of weeds before they grow is a valuable power for a farmer to have at command. The Department of Agriculture is now assisting farmers to recognise the seeds of various weeds, so that seed samples can be examined by purchasers and rejected if dangerous elements are present. The Department has prepared a supply of " weed seed reference cards," which are for sale, with a magnifying glass, at a moderate price. Each "card" consists of two sheets of glass, with a piece of cardboard, perforated with 50 holes, about on inch in diameter, sandwiched between them. In each of the .W cells so formed'a small pinch of a weed seed is cemented, and the name of the weed, in both vernacular and scientific terms, is printed beneath. The charts display the seeds very well by reflected light, and the lens enables the characteristics of each to be clearly seen. An improvement might easily be made by using a modified cement; with the present mountant the seeds cannot be clearly seen with the light behind them but the charts as they are should "find a welcome from all serious agriculturists.
