THRILLING ESCAPES. '
SEVERAL GIRLS INJURED. '; By Telegraph.—Press Association— London, November 3. Seventeen girls have lost their lives as the result of a fire which took place in the premises of Messrs. Barker and Co., drapers, in South Kensington yesterday. Thirty girls were in peril of their lives, and there were some thrilling escapes.
One girl was dashed to death on the pavement after jumping from the fourth storey.
Others, who leaped to the pavement, were seriously injured. One rescued girl saw four of her companions perish.
Eight girls are still missing, and there is no hope that they have escaped.
Eleven girls were taken to the hospital and four of them have since succumbed to their injuries. The heat was so intense that any further rescues were impossible. Heart-rending scenes occurred at the fire. The building was gutted.
