Three men. one of them being an experienced Waihi miner, were taken on by the mining companies this morning, making the j total engaged for the week 34. Several other well-known local miners intend starting work on Monday morning, and if the present rato at which the man are signing . on is maintained during the next two | weeks the Waihi Gold Mining Company should then havo all tho men that can be employed underground until a second shift is commenced. It is quite probable that a second shift will not bo started until after tho Christmas holidays. One of the Waihi Company's pumps will be put into commission on Monday to deal with the water which has accumulated below tho 1000 ft level. THE FEDERATION'S FUND. BIGGEST CONTRIBUTORS. [p.t telegraph.—press association.] Wellington, Friday. The collections made for the Waihi and Reefton workers to October 21, total £22,615. Australian contributions total £4550. The biggest New Zealand contribution:} to date are those of the Granity miners £2205, State miners (Dunollv) £1964, Denniston miners £1810, Blackball miners, £1699, Waikato miners £1108, and Wellington waterside workers (1000 members) £408. The Blackball miners nunlber onlv 250, but thev have contributed nearlv £1' 00.
