Eraser) made an j announcement regarding cessation of work !on a number of railway lines. Ha said j roads should come first, and there were too many railways in hand. He intended that for the time being work would bo stopped on tho following lines: — Wailii-Tauranga line. Napier-Gisborne line (at the south end). Fox ton-New Plymouth deviation. | South Island Main Trunk (north and I south ends). | In this connection he contended that the land to bo opened up should be purchased by the Crown before the line was gone on with. Midland railway, which, however, he thought should be carried on to Murchison. licefton , end of the Midland railway ought to be stopped when it reached Inangahua. Ross-Inangahua line. Catlin East line. Mr. Frasex said ho proposed to visit the various localities during tho recess, and see for himself the condition of things. He urged that it would bo better to have light railway lines or tramways at a oost of about £2000 a mile, than bad roads in certain country districts. EAST COAST RAILWAY. A PROTEST FROM WAIHI. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Waihi, Friday. The Waihi Borough Council has decided to send the following resolution relative to the East Coast railway to the Minister for Public Works:"lib is noted with surprise and alarm that work on the Waihi-Athenree section of the East Coast railway is to be discontinued, while the amount of £1500 authorised has not been more than half spent, and that the sura proposed for this year's authorisation is only £5000. This Council desires to urge on the authorities that these moneys allocated by Parliament should be expended, that the' vote this session be not ess than £20,000, and the construction vigorously prosecuted.''
