AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL.
ROADING FREEMAN'S BAY. SOME TRAMWAY MATTERS, The Auckland City Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. C. J. Parr), and Messrs.: A. J. Entrican, P. J. Ncrheny, P.. T. Michaels, J. C. Gleeson, J. Knight., J. M. Mennie, .R. Tudehope, G. Read, and F. E. N. Gaudin. In connection with the Freeman's Bay reclamation, the secretary of the Harbour Board wrote stating that the Board would agree to the duplication of the sewer; that the Board was prepared to construct roads similar to those already made by it and taken over by the Council; that it declined to pay an inspector of works to be appointed by the Council; and that the plans for the roads would be prepared in the Board's offices. It also asked for the Council's approval of the plan for loading the reclamation. The oily engineer submitted a report upon the letter. The proposal to construct, the roads, he wrote, was satisfactory if the foundations were treated specially, in view of the fact that they were to be made on reclaimed ground. As the Board had decided to do the construction, it should pay the Council a sum noi exceeding five per cent, of the cost, to cover the cost of inspection and supervision. The proposal to prepare the plans in the Council's office had been made in the Board's interest, but. there was no objection to the Board preparing them if the work was carried out to fit in with other city works. The engineer and the Works Committee were asked to report on the matter.
TRAKWAY REPAIRS.
THE DESTINATION SIGN/?.
The manager of the Auckland Tramways Company wrote stating that the company had arranged to renew the cross-overs in Customs-street East and West, asid proposed to alter their positions, as suggested by the Council's traffic inspector. It was decided to recommend the approval to the proposed shifting of the crossovers further from Queen-street in Customs-street I East and West. A complaint was received to the effect that many tramcars. when going inwards bear the sign of their outward journey instead of " city." It was further pointed out that the board should show the immediate destination on the car in every case. According to the Tramways Company the practice of showing the immediate destination of the car was generally observed, but the company had again drawn the attention of motormen and conductors to the matter. It was resolved to send a reply to this effect to complainant. The traffic inspector reported, that for the period ended October 21 the following tramway traffic delays had occurred: Missed trips by defectivecars, 18; by derailed cars, 23; by obstruction on line, 6: by accident, 2; by cables fusing. 1. RECORD ASH MINUTE CLERK.
THE QUESTION OF SALARY. i The.appointment of a record and minute J clerk has been engaging the attention of I the Council and the Finance Committee. I The committee, which met to reconsider the question of salary recommended that fresh applications be invited for the position, the salary to commence at £170 per annum. The .Mayor contended that the salary was too small to induce a suitable mam to apply for tho position. He pointed out that the minute clerk would be a very important official, as he would have to keep i the whole of the Council's records. It ,' would be impossible to get a man at the [ salary mentioned. The town clerk's office in Auckland was run at half the cost of ' the Wellington office, and it was neces- ' sary that the office here should be brought to "as efficient a state as that of Welling- . Hon. In this connection it was absolutely , neceusary to have & competent record clerk, and he thought the salary should ' be fixed at £250. What was £250 per 1 annum in comparison with having the < Council's records properly kept ? i On the motion of the Mavor, it was . decided to fix the salary at £250. ■ 0 . ———- ■ r— . COMPLAINT ABOUT A CHIMNEY. THE SMOKE NUISANCE. A petition was received from Mrs. S. Wilton and 14 others, praying for an abatement of the smoke and dust nuisance from a laundry chimney in Hobson-street. ; The chief sanitary inspector was of opinion I that ou some occasions the smoke was j excessive in quantity, and of such a' nature as to bo offensive and to create a nuisance. On the recommendation of the Works Committee it was resolved that the owners be notified to abate the nuisance within 40 days. CURRENT FOR SUBURBS. NEWMARKET ACCEPTS TERMS. The town clerk of Newmarket wrote stating that the Newmarket B< { Council had accepted the conditions under which the City Council was prepared to supply, electricity for the borough, and asked' {hat a deed of agreement should be supplied. The matter was referred. to the Electric and Water Committee. SANITARY CONVENIENCES. , WORK TO PROCEED AT ONCE. Three tenders, one at £1260, one at £1261, and the third at £1296, were received for the construction of sanitary conveniences in Customs-street West. The engineer's estimate for the wr?k was £1100, and in view of the difference between that sum and the lowest tender, it was decided that the work. should be done by tho engineer's department, the cost not* to exceed the estimate. Fittings to tho value of about £400 are to be added to the cost of the building. The engineer was instructed to have the work begun as soon as possible. MISCELLANEOUS. ! FANSHAWE-STREET FORMATION. The secretary of the Harbour Hoard wrote asking that in terms of the agreement between the Beard and tho "Citv Council, tho Roman Catholic Bishop, and tho Parker-Lamb Timber Company/ the Council should proceed at orce with the formation of Fa-nshawe-street, the thoroughfare bounding the Freeman's Bay reclamation on the landward side. The letter was referred to the Works Committee. The Harbour Board wrote conveying approval of the proposed cabstand in the vicinity of Ferry Building, with the exception of that part intendedto accoitaiodato five cabs in. Little Queen- ' street. It was stated that this street ' was too narrow, and already congested with i heavy traffic, and was therefore not suit- 1 able for the purpose. The letter was re- < ferred to the Works Committee. i Mr. Tudehopo asked whether the Council ' was prepared to supply water for the . \-,A- swin , limn S bath at a rate lower i than lOd per thousand gallons. The ques- ' tion raised a discussion upon the fairness of the system now followed by the Council in charging, for water. The primary question ! c was left unanswered, and was left to the 11 Water Committee to deal with, along with I the general question of water charges A deputation of five cabmen wafted on I tho Works Committee, and asked for the retention of the stand for horse-cabs in '" qneen-street in front of the new post office, ! i La tho recommendation of the committee, «
