OBITUARY.
CAPTAIN • HENRY ROSE. : ~ [b-s: telegraph.— association.]j Wellington, • Wednesday. A private cablegram received in Wellington this afternoon announced the death of Captain. Henry Rose, formerly wellknown in Wellington. Captain Rose was born in Central America in 1833, and went to sea at the ago of 14. Ho became third officer at 18, and at 24 years of age obtained his captain's certificate. For 15 years (between 1860 and 1875) he traded between London and Canterbury. Until 1869 he was- an. officer of the old White Star line, and eventually became captain of the first • boat of the Now Zealand (Shipping Company, the Rakaia. In 1875 ho was appointed marine superintendent of tho company's fleet for the Dominion, and a year later ho accented the position of local manager of the 3iew Zealand Shipping Company at Wellington. He retired from tin) service 16 years ago, and since then lived in retirement in London, occasionally making trips to New Zealand. Captain Rosa was for nearly 20 years a member of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, and also filled tho position of chairman of the Harbour Hoard for several terms. Captain Rose has left a widow and an ranunarriod daughter in London, another daughter (wife of 0. V. Houghton, manager of the Now Zealand Shipping Company at Auckland), and three soiis— J. G. Rose," with W. and G. Turabull and Co.; Mr. W. H. Rose, with H. G. Anderson and Co., Wellington; and Lientenant A. E. Rose, of the British army.
