THE DRAINAGE BOARD.
PROGRESS OF THE WORKS.
A meeting of the Drainage Board was held last evening, when the Mayor (Mr. C. J., Parr) occupied the chair, and there were also present: Messrs. A. J. Entrican, Hawkins,. Trevithick, Nerheny, Mackay, Knight, Gaudin, Gleeson, Michaels, and Casey. The engineer's report stated that in connection with contract No. 12, main I sewer, section 4, otiy, there was sill a ! short length of main sewer tunnel to be ! driven near Queen-street on the length between the shaft at High-street and the : one at Nelson-stn;et. The rock encountered in this tunnel was still showing, and was to a great extent responsible for the tunnel still being incomplete. v Under High-street the branch tunnel had been driven for about 60ft-. On the main sewer at the western end of the contract, about 70ft had been concreted up to the springing line, and the moulding oi arch and invert blocks had. been continued;. > : About 700ffc of earthenware "pipes 'and 1300 ft of coftcreta sower had been constructed ok the Hobson, Bay third section, and the work was progressing satisfactorily. The rock met with near the angle where the line came out of the railway yard on to Manukau Road had been much more than was expected. This however had been tunnelled through, and with the air drill which had beer.' installed, the rock still to be gone through was not expected to add largely to .'.the cost of the work. Letters were received from Mr. J. Alexander, solicitor, on behalf of Mr. 0. A. Whitney, giving notice of his intention to claim conrjxmsation for alleged damage to his property by the Board's drainage operation, and from Mr. P. Spencer, _ solicitor,, complaining of the damage to his property through the Board's drainage operations" (contract No. 13). ' Both letters were referred to the Works Committee.
LOCAL BODIES' COMPLAINT. At last night's meeting of the Drainage Board the Works Committee reported that it had been waited on by a deputation from the Remuera Road Board, Remuera Ratepayers' Association, and.' Parnell Borough Council, complaining _ that the temporary discharge of sewage into Hobson Bay would create a nuisance and be a menace to the public health, and asking the Board to at least minimise the suggested nuisance by agreeing to dredge the Orakei Channel; also, that the construction of the retaining wall across Hotoson Bay be proceeded with. The committee had instructed the engineer to submit a full report on the subject. The engineer recommended that the Board withhold its permission for the use of Branch No. 1 until the tanks were completed,' and the sewage could b» discharged at Orakei through the main outfall. !
The engineer's report was adopted, and it v.-as decided-'te reply to the local bodies interested) pointing out that the present arrangement was the best that could be provided until the completion of the drainage scheme.
