DEFENCE PROSECUTIONS.
At the Police Court vesterdav before Mr. F. V. Fiazer, S.M., Oscar F. Hunt, Cecil G. Lee, and H. V Mills", wore each fined £1 and costs, 7s, for having failed to attend a military camp as required by the Defence Act of 1908. Similar charges against E. Day, H. C. Jeddy, and Arthur Challiner were withdrawn! the magistrate stating that until the defendants had taken the oath required by the Defence Act they could not be called on to render service. Cases against K. R. Taylor, C. R. Newman, and It. G. Phillip, charged with similar offences, were adjourned until November 3.5. Similar cases against H. B. Jarvis and F. Edmonds were dismissed for lack of prosecution. Decision was reserved in the cases of C. Bailey and W. Booth, charged with similar offences, as legal points in their favour were raised by Mr. Singer. A case brought against F. Pugh for having failed to take the oath of allegiance was dismissed, the magistrate upholding legal points raised by counsel.
