The •' Anglican Synod of i tho J diocese ,; of Auckland, sat for the fourth day' yesterday,, Bishop Crossley presiding. ; ; Archdeacon Willis moved i~" That the Synod heartily endorses world-petition to the next Hague Conference now being generally circulated ; and • commends \. it to the Church throughout the diocese as likely to be a valuable factor in preserving the peace of the world." He explained that the petition urged the introduction of arbitration to settle disputes- between! nations, with a view ,' to the securing of peace. ■; ■

Mr. Fisher seconded'.the motion "to save any waste of time/' He added that in 'his opinion such motions were absolutely useless. Rev. C. A. B. Watson moved as an amendment, that after the word) - Synod the following bo inserted :— Whilst regretting the present necessity for the Bri.Empire to stand on defence, and to keep her naval • and land forces in a state of efficiency." Ho pointed out that in his opinion the motion as it stood! might, be used to forward the Little Englanders 5 ideas, and as a lever to reduce Britain's defences.. Mr. J. H. Upton opposed the motion, and hoped it would'be withdrawn. The president stated that he had intended to us© his prerogative and decline to accept the motion, for he did hot know the full text of the petition. He heed scarcely say, however, that he would do all vin his power to forward efforts ; to secure 'peace.,' The motion was withdrawn. The Opium Trade. ; Mr. J. W. ", Blackwell mov<id, " That this Synod deplores the crime of which tho British nation is guilty in forcing opram upon the people of China;, and this notwithstanding that the House of' Commons has twice declared the trade- to be morally indefensible.' ;He said that there was no need to explain the motion, for the matter had often been discussed. Captain Clayton seconded the motion. . Canon Mac Murray did not think the motion was timely, for the; British nation was, the present time, doing its very best to put an end to the traffic.. The. president thought that the Synod should be very careful ; in t passing such resolutions, and thereby laying blame upon the . British Government when the latter probably did ' nob deserve it. ;,.: Was it quite right to ; say that the; present position of tho British nation was; blameworthy ; A motion that the' Synod pass on to the next business was carried. ■•■■•: ' A committee was appointed to consider the request that the Dalonce of the proceeds from the sale of allotment 7, section 18, Village of Onehunga, now in the hands of. the General Trust Board, be ; held upon trust; for the ; Parish of St. PeWt*B, and that in the meantime the income derivable therefrom should bo paid to the vestry of St. Peter's, Parish. . .

The Synod 'warmly ; commended The Bible in State Schools: League of New Zealand to * the sympathy and prayers of: all Anglican ; people, and ;•;• urged the committee to do all in -: their power to further its work. . Sunday Observance. When the Synod resumed in the evening, the Rev. H. H. Robjohns moved " That Synod, being moved; by a desire to promote a. better .religious • observance of the Lord's Day, and to . secure'' it as.;a day of rest for the whole community, respectfully suggests to the Bishop to consult with the heads of other religious

i bodies with a view to joint action in the , formation of a Central Committee of the Lord's Day Alliance of New Zealand." The motion was withdrawn in favour of ■ the following motion, proposed by Canon i Mac Murray :—" That Synod desiring to . promote a better religious observance of Lord's Day, and to secure it as a day of > rest for the whole country, earnestly, commends to all church, people the aims , of the .Lord's Day Alliance of Zealand.'' Tie amendment was carried without any discussion. • v'-r. • ' The Eev. H. B. Wingfield moved t— " That this Synod pledges itself to strain, ously support the Melaneaioa Mission,' arid calls upon all church people of this diocese to help the mission by prayers and alms." 1 The motion was carried. • The Rev. W. H. ; Wilson moved, on behalf of Mr. G. H. Bellamy That the motion moved by Mr. G. H. Bellamy in the first session 'of the twentieth Synod of the diocese, and agreed to by the Synod, * That a committee be set up to - consider and report on the petition from the paro- •. chial district of j Northern Wairoa during the recess, and their- report be presented to the next session of Synod,' be rescinded, and that the petition presented at last : session of Synod be withdrawn." :',;■ i The motion was carried without-•• discussion. | Mr. W. J. Speight moved, "That the , Standing Committee be requested to take into consideration the matter of the large amount of business brought before Synod of which no adequate notice has been given I before the meeting. of; Synod, and suggest a remedy at next Synod." -The motion was carried Without discussion. Sit. John's College Governors. The Rev. J. King Davis-moved,/That it be, a respectful recommendation to the General Synod that provision ■ should be made for the election by past students of St. John's College of an additional governor of the college." A lengthy discussion followed, and the motion was carried. The Rev, W. C. Fisher moved, " That the Standing Committee be desired by Synod to consider the regulation laid down to 1 control the election of the Standing Committee, with a view to avoiding the difficulties which have been found to exist, and report thereon to the next meeting of Synod." The motion was carried. Archdeacon Calder moved, "That an' advisory committee to 'he Cathedral secretary and the Bray ' Library be appointed, such committee to consist of the Revs. C. A. B. Watson, J. K. Davis, W. G. Monckton, Dr. Roberton, and Mr. W. E. Hall." The motion was carried; Parish Finance. Mr. J. H. Upton moved, ''That .the practical suggestion made by His Lordship the Bishop in his address on the subject of parish finance be, commended to the consideration of the vestries and Church committee of the diocese." The motion was adopted, with the addition of the' words, " and that the several archdeacons bo requested to bring the same before the several archdeaconries." Messrs. Alexander Grierson and Sterricker were re-elected auditors for the ensuing yea?, and the members of the Sunday-school Board, as last year, were reappointed, with the recommendation that they should associate with themselves the representatives of Sunday-schools, with equal powers. -, ' The session was then concluded with the Benediction and the singing of the Doxology.
