THE STRIKE THAT FAILED.

MANY LOSE THEIR JOBS.

FEDERATION'S TACTICS.

MORE UNIONS MAY SECEDE.

Soar a. severe lesson has been learned by the militant members of tho Federation of Labour in Auckland, particularly through tho complete failure of the general labourers' strike, that the unrest in labour circles is gradually quietening down. Work on the waterfront is proceeding hourly without interference, and there is no sign of any delay to building and other contracts in Ibe city. Yesterday there were still a large number of labourers idle, for the strikers of last week are finding that their positions have been filled in their absence, and work is not plentiful. Discontent, growing even into anger, is apparent on tho part of many members of tho Federation in Auckland, owing to the action of tho executive in refusing to give its support to the Auckland men. It is even stated that the agitation! for secession amongst the waterside workers is growing to such an extent that it is probable that a secret ballot will bo held on the question within the next week or two. The federation executive, the complaint is, stirs up discontent amongst the workers, sets the ball rolling by holding a 24-hours' demonstration', and then refuses to have anything to do with the victims of its own foolishness. The feeling against these methods is becoming very strong amongst tho members of the affiliated unions, and now that the tramwaymen have cut adrift it is more than probable that the general labourers, waterside workers, and brewery employees will take the same step.
