CHELTENHAM BEACH.

o REMOVAL OF SAND AND SHELti, At a recent meeting of the Waitemala Chamber of Commerce, the members decided to write to the Devonport Borough Council protesting against the removal of sand and shell from Cheltenham Beach. The Council decided that the letter be received, and this decision was conveyed to the Chamber of Commerce. The members of the latter body, at their last meeting, considered the reply somewhat chilly, but they do not intend to be frozen into silence-. They discussed the matter fully, and many references were made to the manner in which the beach was being spoiled. One member suggested that the' Chamber should ascertain whether. the people of Devonport could not obtain an. injunction against the Council which would prevent the removal of sand and shell. It was pointed out that the Chamber had no power to do this. The people who handed over their riparian rights to the Council should move in that direction. After further discussion the following motion was carried:—" That this meeting expresses surprise at the. manner in which' the Chamber's letter of protest in rcg&wj ' to Cheltenham Beach was received by the Council, and asks the Council if it will receive a deputation in connection with tin matter at its next meeting."
