PHYSICAL TRAINING.
ArTnoRmES on modern, educational methods are unanimous in their endorsement of physical training as a collateral necessity of the educational curriculum. The playgrounds of many largo city schools are quite inadequate for requirements, and it would be a difficult matter to make them larger on account of cost. In reference to this matter, Mr. J. Dawson, Chief Inspector to the New South Wales Department of .Education, expresses the opinion that the school is fortunate which is near a public park. " Indeed, in the future." he says, '' it would seem to be the wisest plan, to place new schools close to a public park. Such parka should have a space railed off for the children, just as there, are rpaces sacred to the cricketer and the bowler of more mature years. But actually there are those who begrudge the children this privilege, as if they were .not quite so important, as other sections of the community, and the space set apart for them would limit the enjoyment of grown-ups. A movement towards the better use of parks and open spaces by affording opportunities for free and organised play has lately been set on foot, and, as it is in the highest sense in th& public interest it is to be hoped that it will grow to such an erxfcetnb an the city that there will be scarcely a crowded area without its open space sacred to the games and play of children."
