A short while ago the London press had a good deal to say regarding a new syn- ']! thetic rubber, obtained from fish refuse. Dr. Robert Henriques is reported by a German newspaper to have said : —"The process is altogether worthless, and it has be-»n submitted to several chemical tests. The process consists in separating the albuminous substances of fish by means of acid from all the parts that are* soluble in .... wafer, and retaining the remaining parts that are soluble in acid. These are then decomposed by suitable antiseptic agents presumably formaldehyde. The resulting substance is no more than a mass resembling gelatine, obtained from dead fish and formalin, which is further treated with . sulphur. The products so obtained have proved to be unable to resist water, and do not constitute a good substitute for rubber—much less are they synthetic libber.'' FRUIT AND PRODUCE MARKET.
