HAMILTON.

THE CHAMBER OP COMMERCE.

At tho regular meeting of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce a letter was received from Mr. J. A. Young, M.P., slating that the Postmaster-General had informed him that the Railway Department stated that there is not sufficient space in the railway buildings at either Hamilton or Frankton Junction for a coin-in-the-plot telephone, and adds that as the number of exchange subscribers at either place is not large, it is doubtful whether a slot machine would bo self-supporting. Under tho circumstances tho Department has decided to hold tho matter over for tho present. In regard to the establishment of the chair of agriculture at the Ruakura farm of instruction, it was decided to ask the Businessmen's Leaguo and the board of governors of the Hamilton High School to set up committees to work with the committee sot up by the Borough Council and tho • executive of tho Chamber, and go into the matter thoroughly. Tho Rotorua Settlers' Association wrote in support of having the chair of agriculture for the Auckland University established at the Ruakura farm. The Postal Department wrote that as the box at the Hamilton Post Office and a box between Hamilton and Frankton Junction aro cleared on week days _ at 9.15 p.m., they should meet all requirements, and as no mails are dealt with at Hamilton oil Sundays, they cannot see their way to depart from the present procedure. 'It was decided to refer the matter to the postmaster at Hamilton. _ A petition from 16 settlers in. tho aitetuna district, asking the Chamber to give its support to _ a trial survey being authorised tor a railway from irankton Junction to the Raglan Harbour was received, and it was decided to support having the proposed trial survey made. _ At the quarterly meeting of the aikato Licensing Committee, Inspector Bennett stated that he had visited the Waikato' Hotel, and had found the whole drainage system in a very bad condition. The committee warned the licensee that 11 the drain ago was not put .on a good looting, in accordance with plans approved by the Health Department, his license would bo seriously endangered, at the next application. The health inspector complained of certain sewerage arrangements. These were ordered to be remedied at once. , , . A transfer of license was granted to J Rountrce from G. B. Main for the Waikato Hotel. A temporary license was granted to the Waikato A. and P. Association for the two show days. 4, presentation was made to Mr. V\. oshorn of tho Hamilton linesmen and telegraphic staff, of a. travelling bag and hair-brushes by his fellow-workers, on the occasion of his severing his connection with the Department to taka up missionary work.

At tho monthly meeting of the Hitngahunga Board, it petition was received from tho settlers on tho Mata Mata South side of the Board's area, asking that tho Board's drainage area bo extended so as to include them. Ib was unanimously resolved to forward the petition on to the Government, with a request from tho Board, approving of the. petitioners' inclusion. It "was decided that the chairman proceeded to Wellington and interviewed tho Government regarding certain grants and subsidies. The superintendent ■of the State Advances Office wrote advising tho Board that it had provisionally agreed to a lean of £4500 for carrying out the dramago works. . it While playing m tho football match, "Tvkes" against Waihou, Mr. E. HIGH-PRESSURE WATER SUPPLY.

The borough water supply is now complete, and connections have been mado with'many residences and business places. The fire 'brigado is well equipped with necessary gear, uniforms, etc. It as called out recently to .extinguish a lire in a small detached fislishop, and for the first time used the new appliances connecting with tho high-pressure' supply. It proved almost too much for the brigademen, ono man at the nozzle being knocked down with the force of the issuing water. When tho stream was played on tho building, the' impact knocked tho frail structure flat before extinguishing tho flames. Very general sympathy is expressed with tho Rev. H. 0. T. Ilanby on his accident. Resolutions have been forwarded to him from local bodies in town, and district, conveying expressions of regret. He is making satisfactory progress at the Hamilton Hospital. A largo Celtic sports gathering is being organised to take place next month, tho object being to help to provide funds for tho establishing of a convent at Taumarunui. The borough drain a construction is drawing to a close. Ono street after another is being uprooted, and for a while is in a state of chaos. Strong agitation lias been begun to cut. off tho King Country from tho Waikato hospital district, and to enlarge the Taumarunui Hospital, to accommodate extra patients. Tho Masonic ball took place last week, and proved an enjoyable function. Tho annual railway ball takes place next week. The first, cattle sale was held at Owhango last week, and proved quite satisfactory. A fine new Maori meeting house or wliarepuni is being erected here by two of the leading natives, Piki and Ngatas.
