A movement has . been on foot for some time past in the Auckland Garrison Officers Club for the purpose of erecting a suitable memorial to the late Colonel Abbott, D.5.0., who died at sea while returning to New Zealand to take command of the Auckland district.

The deceased officer was for some time chairman of the Officers' Club, and his modest; and gentle nature endeared him to " all. It has now been . definitely decided to erect a memorial tablet in St. Mary's Cathedral, Parnell. and the tablet Will bo unveiled on the afternoon of Sunday, September 29. Colonel Logan, officer commanding the district, has been asked to arrange a special church parade for the occasion, and it is hoped that all who served under Colonel Abbott in South Africa will also attend.. General Godlev will in all probability be present. The veterans, among whom . Colonel, Abbott was known and respected, are arranging to take part in the ceremony. The tablet, which, will be an exceedingly large and handsome one, is now in process of manufacture, and when erected will form a fitting tribute to the memory of one of the finest soldiers New Zealand sent to the recent Boer war.. . \
