LADIES' TOURNAMENT. WINS EOR NELSON AND WAIRARAPA. [by telegraph.—rntss association.] OniusTcnrKcn, Monday. The second day's play of the New Zealand's hockey tournament was carried through at Sydenham Park to-day in perfect weather, it being if anything too warm. Tho grounds, however, had much improved, and conditions of play were much better than on Saturday. The matches played resulted as follows:— A Section: Nelson, 5 goals, beat Poverty Bay, 2; Taranaki. 2 goals, drew with Ota go, 2: AA'airarapa, 2 goals, beat Manawatu, ml. B Section: Canterbury A, 7 goals, beat West Coast, nil; Hawke's Bay. 5 goals, beat Wellington. 1; AVanganui 4 goals, beat Buller. 1. NOTES ON THE GAME. [FROM CUE SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] ChRISTCUXTICH, Monday. The gamo of the afternoon was that between Nelson and Poverty Bay. A magnificent exhibition of the game resulted, the pace being fast, and the game open throughout. On the play Poverty Bay were unfortunate to lose; a draw would have been a fairer indication of the game. The stick work and dash of the Poverty Bay forwards were very fine, but scarcely more bo than the clever intercepting and hitting of the Nelson backs. Play travelled with surprising speed from one cud of the ground to tho other by skilful passing rashes, and a large crowd of 6ucctators gavo vent to their feelings continually. During the last 10 minutes the pace was tremendous, and a better exhibition of ladies' hockey could scarcely be. imagined. The Wellington-Hawke'a Bav match was another good contest, the score reading one all at half-time. Thereafter the combination and speed of the Hawke's Bay forwards completely disorganised the opposing backs, this permitting an easy win for Hawke's Bay. The winners' work in the circle was an object lesson in quickness and forceful shooting. The other fixtures were not quite the same class. Auckland had tho bye. and practised at Sydenham Park this morning. All the players are well except Miss Ross, whose injured foot will prevent her from participating further in the tournament-. The following team has been chosen for to-morrow's match against AVanganui:—Misses Brophy. Daines. Payton, Mnldoon. Wylie, Gear. Cooke, Campbell, Pickering, Kenny, and Bennett. WAIKATO Y. WEDNESDAY REPRESENTATIVES. At Eden Park to-morrow afternoon tho Wednesday hockey representatives will play a team selected from tho Waikato players. I A good game should result. Following is the Auckland Harcsnape. Ganlcy, ! Horsvool, Thomas, tfwan. Rice, Bunker. Thompson, Smythe, Burton, and Durham. A brake will leave the Caledonian Hotel 1 for the ground, at 2.15 o'clock.
