THE PRISONS BOARD.

A MAGISTRATE'S CRITICISM. The Prisons Board at Wellington was trenchantly criticised by Mr. 11. W. Bishop, S.M., when sentencing a Burnham absconder at the Christchurch Magistrate's Court. Mr. Bathgate, deputymanagor of the school, who appeared on behalf of the Burnham authorities, mentioned the Prisons Board, when the magistrate remarked: "Oh, you can't tell mc anything about the Prisons Board. I know all about them." Addressing the prisoner before sentencing him, lie said: " You're just the sort of person who would tell a plausible tale to the Board and get let out before your time." The prisoner, he said, was a criminal degenerate, and should not be allowed to be at large.
