FIVE WEEKS UNDER SNOW.

HEAVY LOSSES OF SHEEP.

/by TELEGRAPH. — SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT Wellington, Monday. Vert heavy loss will bo suffered by pastoralists in North Canterbury and South Marlborough, ■ owing to tho prevalence of snowstorms this winter. ■ Telegrams have reached tho Minister for Agriculture (Hon. ..W. F. Massey) stating that during the last five . weeks many thousands of acres of pastoral country have been covered with snow, and fully 100,000 sheep have been imprisoned to such an extent that all efforts to rescue them have failed. In tho Mackenzie country, which comprises the high lands of Canterbury, the loss is stated to be less serious than it was last winter, when nearly every station had its flocks greatly depleted. From tho accounts that have

reached Wellington it is evident that tho situation in the high country lying to the north of the Waiau is extremely critical The fact that sheep have been cue off from all feed for five weeks shows t/iat pastoralists will sustain very heavy losses.
