Ottawa, August 15. bOME anxiety was caused yesterday by the receipt of a wireless message from the Allan liner Corsican (which struck an iceberg off the Newfoundland coast and which was subsequently reported to be continuing on her voyage) stating that she was unable to proceed. Great anxiety was felt for the vessel's safety, but the fears were set at rest to-day by the receipt of a further wireless telegram by the Allan Line. This message states that the vessel is safe, and that she is proceeding on her voyage to Liverpool. The steamer's delay was due to fog. EIGHTY MILES OF ICE. A HUNDRED BERGS SIGHTED.
London, August 14.
The Atlantic liners report the presence of an exceptionally large quantity of ice in the Atlantic.
One vessel encountered 100 large icebergs, and another 80 miles of ice floes.
The companies are abandoning the northern track .
There are two different routes {or transAtlantic liners bound for New York—the winter and the summer route. The usual date for changing from the winter to the summer route has just arrived. The winter route is used between August 14 and January 14, and lies to the north, passing about 80 miles S.E. of Cape. Race. The summer route is usually followed between January 15 and August 15. and passes about, 300. miles S.E. of Cape Race, keeping outside lat. 42dog, N. long. 47deg. W., which is the extreme average limit of the ice drift between March and July. When the Titanic struck in April last she was in lat. 41deg. 46min. N., and was, therefore, 14 miles Miith of the i-upposed possible range of ice fields.
