HONOURS FOR CAPTAIN ROSTRON
[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION'.] Wellington, Thursday. A private letter received from the United States says the captain of the California was dismissed, and the captain of the. Carpathia covered with honours, besides being presented with .00,000 in cash and several loving cups. The captain of the Carpathia was also awarded the Congressional medal. This honour is only given by special Act of Congress, and Captain Rostron is the seventh in the history of America to receive the medal. Even Admiral Dewey did not pel it.
•Evidence at the Titanic inquiry showed that the California, was but 12 miles away when the Titanic sank, and that it' the captain had received the distress signals. he could have reached the vessel in time to save the majority of the passengers. The evidence of one of the officers of the California showed that distress signals, probably from the Titanic, were wjyj, but disregarded. Captain Lord, of the California, was reported to have been severely censured lor lack of vigilance, by the .American Committee of Inquiry. Captain Rostron was in charge of the < una ill liner Carpal which rescued those of the Titanic.'« passengers who escaped in boats. lie was specially thanked by the American Senate, and also received the Liverpool Shipwreck Humane Society's gold medal.
