RETIREMENT OF WILDING. By Telegraph.—Press -cU-oeiution.—Copyright. London, July 31. Anthony Wilding, the tennis champion, announces his retirement from first-class tennis. The retirement of Anthony Wilding will be regretted by lawn tennis enthusiasts throughout the world. Ever since Wilding was a law student in England a few years ago he has given up practically the whole of his time to lawn tennis. A recent announcement that he is going into partnership with a London barrister heralded his entry into business life, and a consequent retirement from his present prominent position in the athletic world. He has not retired from first-clafs lawn tennis without gaining a place in the first ranks of the world's best players. When he recently beat Norman Brookes in Melbourne several critics proclaimed Wilding to be the finest lawn tennis player in the world. He was instrumental in bringing the Davis Cup to Australasia in 1907, when he partnered Norman Brookes, and defeated England, the holders of the cup. ! Wilding has been champion of New Zeai land several times. He has also won Ausi tralian championships, and he recently dej feated A. W. Gore in a match for the : championship of England. Wilding is I champion of many English counties, and ] has also won championships on the Contij nent. ,
