Asormt admitted to a deputation that tho increase in (lie cost of living was undoubtedly one element in the causation of labour unrest, but he took occasion to correct the assumption that the increase in. prices is a phenomenon peculiar to the last few years, and ho quoted a specially prepared table on the subject. The index numbers are founded on prices and wages in 1900, the base year, and the general trend, is evident in the following abridgement :—
