THE ASSAULT AT EPSOM.
PAUL SERiM CHARGED.
As a sequel to the assault on Alfred J, Robert#, at Epsom, on. J;he evening of Tuesday, Juno 25, Paul Engine Serim was charged at the Police Court yesterday with aMauting, Roberts so as to cause him actual bodily barm. The accused, it- will be remembered, was arrested in connection with the recent burglary charges, and is now in custody awaiting his trial at the Supreme Court. On the night in question, Roberts, who keeps a stationer's shop and billiardsaloon opposite the Epsom tram depot, had just locked up his premises, preparatory to going to his house at the back of the section, v when-he received- a heavy blow on th'e head with a piece of timber. Though stunned by the force of the blow, he was not rendered unconscious, and at once called loudly for assistance. His assailant, thereupon ran away. The only reason that can be assigned for the assault, is that Roberts's assailant wished to possess himself of such moneys as had! been taken in the billiard room during the day. As the man ran away, Roberts caught a.glimpse of his face, but it was not familiar to him.
While Serim was in custody Roberts was taken to where a number of prisoners were gathered, and stated that he recognised Serim as his assailant.
The case was adjourned until Wednesday next.
