NORTHCOTE'S PROGRESS.

:;-■'". THE WHARF IMPROVEMENTS. ' ,! V A STAJBT ha« just been made by the Auckland Harbour Boaid with the improvements decided upon in connection with the wharf at Northcote. The principal item will be the installation of a vehicular landing stage, similar to that at the Birkenhead Wharf. It has been decided to remove the present landing stage on the western side of the Auckland ■ Queen-street Wlftrf to the Northcote Wharf, and preliminary work with a view - to its reception at the latter place has now been put in hand. The Northcote Wharf will not only be extended some fur- ;; ther 80ft, but will also be widened to 90ft, ;: to cope with the increased traffic. When these works are completed (and they are expected to be out of hand inside of eight months; the steamer Spairowhawk will run a frequent cargo and vehicular service between Auckland, Northcote, and Birkenhead. This will prove of great benefit to the Northcote district, aud the advent of the staging is being looked forward to by fruitgrowers, business people, residents, and builders. ;., It is ejepected fey many that Northcote will become the distributing centre for the ' (Surrounding districts, including Takapuna. As an evidence of the progress of the 'Northcote Borough, it may be mentioned that on both eastern and western beaches, buildings have either been erected, or aire in course of construction, for the purpose of carrying on the boatbuilding industry by former Auckland firms; while a few weeks ago a business site in the main etreet changed hands at £10 per foot.l. In addition to the alterations to be made to tha wharf, the local body has also decided to effect some important improvements, including the widening of the wharf approach, and making a footpath of an easy grade beside the roadway, thus obviating the necessity for using the present high level pathway. These improvements will be carried out simultaneously vilth lbs works now being put in hand by (he tfarbour Board.
