I CHARGE OF THEFT DISMISSED. At the Police Court yesterday, the case against William George Veart, charged with stealing a girth, valued at 30a, the property of Percy Winstone, was continued before Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M. The girth was missed from Mr. Winstone's stables, and it, was subsequently dis-. covered at a second-hand dealer's establishment. The accused admitted having sold it to the dealer for Is, but stated that. it had been given to him by his son, who had, found it in Symonds-street in the proximity of Winstone's stables. After hearing the evidence of the accused's son, and another youth who had been in company with him when he had found the girth, His Worship dismissed the charge, commenting upon the improper and foolish action of the accused in .selling the article before trying to ascertain its ownership. IDLE AND DISORDERLY. John Barrack, a strongly-built labouring man, was charged with being an idle and disorderly person, and also with committing an indecent act in Federal-street. The accused pleaded not guilty to the ' former charge, but admitted the second offence. He stated that he had only been in Auckland a short time, and that he had spent a cheque for £50. He was sen- , tenced to two months' hard labour. MAINTENANCE. John William Young, charged with disobeying an order for the payment of 5s per week towards the maintenance of his son at the Weraroa training farm, was given a chance to make a fresh starts the i order being reduced to 2s 6d, and the arrears, amounting to £2 10s> being mittedCharles Thomas Garmondsway, whose arrears in respect to an order for the payment of 15s for the support of his three children, amounted to £20, was sentenced to 15 days' imprisonment in regard to failing to provide ior the first child, and to 12 days' imprisonment for failing to provide for each of the other children. INTEMPERANCE. For insobriety, one second offender, Patrick O'Neill, was fined 10s, while Edward Logan and Walter Leary, each charged with a breach of his prohibition order, were fined £2 and £1 respectively.
