BASKETBALL.

.- NOTES AND . COMMENTS. Tb« rounds played on Saturday last in the basketball competition served to emphasise the superiority of the old organisations, as both St. Luke's and St David's won. by comfortable margins, the former beating Training College by 10 points to 2, and the latter accounting for Kiwis by Q points to 1. ■ _ In tlie match between St. Luke's anil Training College, St. Luko's combination was excellent, the ball passing, from player to player like clockwork, completely nonplussing their opponents. The ; goalthrowers, Misses Airey and Galloway, excelled themselves, and only the very active defence put up by Miss Lake and Miss Quihri saved the Collegian's from being . badly beaten. The losers seemed unable- to grasp quickly when ,a short pass should gito" way to a lob, and consequently allowed their passes to bo'snapped up by opponents; Their goal-throwers, too, did not tako position quickly, so'that even when they got the ball they lost their opportunities. ■• Although St. David's beat B. ! iwis, again the score, 3 to 1, compared with what it was in the first round, 28 to 3, shows what great strides the latter club has mad© in » tow weeks. In Miss Menzies they have a powerful defender, who is indefatigable, and with a few more practice games they* will be a hard team to beat. A team from, the Normal .School played ■■ a praotic© match, with the! children of She Orphans'- Home", at Papatoetoe jreeehtly. Tlie outing was a. most enjoyable one for the town children. Town schools desirous of similar matches should communicato with tho secretary of the Orphans' Home, Exchange Lauot who will gkdly wraoge ; dates, :.; ~- -,:.:'.:,:■'., :>,■>■, \_ >-j; - |
