BIHKENHEAD TELEPHONE CHARGES.
CONNECTION WITH AUCKLAND.' A tsotexesH has been on foot in Birkenhead to establish & telephone exchange, in lieu of the present, telephone bureau, but the stumbling-block to the proposal has been the connection charges with Auckland which the prospective subscribers would be called upon to pay. , The Birkenhead Borough Council recently communicated with • the postal authorities, and last night, received » reply rom "the Secretary of the - Postal Department, acknowledging the protest against charges for communications with Auckland, and stating that in the event \of an exchange being opened at Birkenhead, connections wilt be bunched to 'enable an all-night sen-ice to be established with Auckland, and that no extra fee will be charged fori; the privilege. The writer regretted that no further concession could be made. The Mayor (Mr. Wm. Wallace) said 1 the reply was most unsatisfactory, as over SO subscribers could be got in Birkenhead if the charges for connection with Auckland were abolished. On his motion, it was decided to renew the application, . the Mayor remarking that in view of the .change of Government a more favourable "policy may be inaugurated. : l On the motion of Mr. F. M. King, it was also resolved to communicate with the Devonport and STerthcote Borough Councils and the member for the district (Mr. Alex. Harris), so that joint action may be taken in the matter.
