St'EAKisi; -at the -annual' banquet of the "Wellington branch of the Farmers' Union to-night the Prime Minister (Hon. T. Mackenzie) defended the calling of the conference of delegates of local bodies, and eaid that the question of education in connection with local government was a subject which could not be trifled with. The conference had framed a measure, and it /remained to be seen whether Parliament .•would approve of it. . Continuing, the Prime Minister defended the action of the Ministry in setting the Civil Service Commission, with a view %o bringing the service up-to-date. He was not making it a party question. Speaking of'the Education Commission, he said the; :, had. to co-ordinate the various systems •They, had to see that there was no over Japping, no undue extravagance.
