SAFETY OF THE SEA.
COMPLAINTS AT SYDNEY. By Telegraph.—Prws Association.—Copyright. Sydney, May 28. A deputation from the Trades Hall which waited upon Mr. Cann. (Chief Secretary) yesterday complained of inefficient inspection of ships' boats and other appliances, and asked for the appointment of a Royal Commission on the maritime industry generally. It was alleged that in hundreds of cases boats were never used, and were stuck in the chocks, so that it was doubtful if they could be lowered into the water. On some vessels, it was Btated, fire drill was never carried out. Mr. Cann said- he was of opinion that the safety appliances were not all that they should bo. He favoured lifeboats on a passenger-carrying basis, not tonnage. He denied that the inspections were not properly conducted, and promised an inquiry, but in view of the Federal Government assuming control of navigation, he hesitated to introduce local legislation.
