POSTAL CHEQUE SYSTEM.
With the view of further developing the Post Office banking system in - the United Kingdom, the Postal' Clerks' Association, which has been holding its annual conference in Bristol, . makes a proposal for the adoption of the new foreign system of the transfer of moneys deposited in the Post Office. Not only is it proposed that any firm, trader, or individual having a banking account should be able to transfer to any other holder of a Post Office account sums up • to any amount free so long as the account is not allowed to fall below the minimum sum of £5, but that amounts up to £500 should bo payable by postal cheque. So far as the Post Office authorities are concerned, there is a desire that the public should be warned against the notion that the proposal emanating from the postal clerks is in any sense an official movement. It is, in fact, merely a movement initiated and.
fostered by Post Office servant* to increase the activity of the Department, so as to enhance the : prospects of promotion for themselves. For years tfia Post Office authorities have been in possession of all particulars and statistics of the system, and are watching, Continental developments very carefully.
