GREAT NORTHERN NOTES.

With only a few more days to go, trainers are sending their charges along in view of the Great Northern Steeplechase Meeting at Ellerslie. Yesterday morning broke showery, with a cold wind blowing, but this did not prevent a largo number of horses working.

Old Paritutu, who claims engagement in both the Great Northerns, was on the uack and strode along freely. Boiliu and Miscount, a pair of Karamu-trained horses, traversed a circuit on the tan, finishing up resolutely. Waiputere, who 19 much in favour for the Great Northern Hurdle luce, has reached headquarters, and was exercised yesterday. Theodore galloped a useful mile and a-quarter on the sand yesterday morning. The Maiden Steeplechase horse King was schooled over the big obstacles in the centre of the course yesterday, making no mistakes. Continuance, Seaman, Sandy Paul, Darby Paul, Gaelic, and others who took part at the Wanganui Jockey Club's Winter Meeting, are expected to reach Ellerslie this morning. Napper was allotted a round of the big country at headquarters yesterday, with A. Julian in the saddle. For a novice the son of Birkenhead gave a good exposition and impressed the trackwatchers considerably. 1 Darby Paul has a good following for the Great Northern Hurdle Baoe on the strength of his Century Hurdle performance, but, 'according to report, he scraped his shin in tho big event at Wanganui, and this may affect him if true. The work at Ellerslie this morning should be full of interest, and it is anticipated that a large number of track-watchers will be present.
