On each s ido of the portico, divided by pillars, are two bays of tho building, containing largo windows, necessary for providing ample lighting 'accommodation. The whole of the exterior will ho rendered in cement, with A rusticated design, and the ornamentation consists of a massive cornice, pediment* .and parapet. .. I'lio plans allow for an area, lOit wide, between the building and the boundary fence, wliicu will bo constructed of iron fencing and brick pillars, rendered in cement. At the entrance- to the building is f««l a pair of collapsible iron gates, and immediately inside is a spacious vestibule, with an ornamental tile floor and dado. The interior will be decorated in a manner befitting a public building, and the general scheme of decoration is specified in the. form of fibrous plaster ceilings, with a cornice in the principal rooms. Most of the rooms will have a dado of V. stained woodwork, and above this the •walls will be finished in cement and tinted white with a washable distemper. The building tiironghout will be lighted with electricity. PROGRESS IN THE COUNTRY. NEW BANK FOR TE AWAMUTO. \Vhii9 the growing business of city firms compels the enlargement of premises, and consequently a marked activity . in the building .trade, the more important towns in the co.'tntrjr districts are experiencing a similar briskness of building operations. Banks especially find their business increasing. The old quarters are becoming neither ia,-rge nor convenient enough for present-day needs, and new branches are proposed for several towns, in the near future. At Te Awannrta, the-old premises of the Bank of New Zealand are shortly to be pulled down, and a modern banking house is to bo erected. An inspection of the plans, at tho office of the architects, Messrs. E. Mahoney and Son, showed that the now building will be erected on the . ite of the present bank, at the corner of Alexandra and Bank Streets. That it will be a substantial contract can be gathered from the fact that it will be a ,:»... wo-stoseyed square block, 63ft by §Bfi, / comprising the bank premises on the ground floor, and the manager's residential quarters on the first floor. ■ The private entrance will be from Bank-street, and tho business entrance from Alexandrastreet. Entering the latter, on the ground floor, are located the banking chamber, ?sft by 26ft, with all necessary counters, i e.-k«.'ledger platforms, etc.. and to the kit is a roomy office for the manager, a lime strongroom, and stationery closet. Pair of the floor space is occupied by some of the private apartments, storerooms, htrjfA dinrngroom, scullery, etc. The resiilcnrtial quarters on the tort floor contain a large drawingroom, four bedrooms, bathroom, and other apartments. The exterior is shown as attractively designed, and will be finished in cement work, with pillars, cornices, etc., portions <>f the face being pointed to represent work. The interior will be finished i:: plaster, and the fittings of the bank vill be of polished woodwork. Alteraa-. !:•,-!• tenders will be submitted for erecting; :•» brick and reinforced concrete, TE .* AWAMTJTU POST. OFFICE. PROPOSED CLOCK TOWER. A proposed addition to Te Awanratu is , ~a clock tower, which, if decided on, will be erected adjoining the present post office. : -It will be an eminently useful and ornamental addition to the public office, and will rise to a height of about 47ft, -which will make it a conspicuous landmark. It is proposed that the tower itself shall be 12ft square, built of IBin brickwork, ornamented with cement work, and ehall bo topped with a dome and flagstaff, support*'! on an ornamental cornice; also, V that the 'first storey be built to correspond \ with the -design of*the post office. 1 ' I OTHER BUILDINGS IN THE '■■[ , COUNTRY. 1 ' — • } NEW BUTTER FACTORY AT | FRANKTON. The erection of buildings to deal with , the ever-increasing dairy industry will be ~'■ i welcomed by thoee interested in this direction in the country districts, as an increas- ' ing eign of the country's advance. The latest addition takes the shape of a proposed butter factory with cottages, to be ereced at Frankton for the Waikato Cooperative Dairy Company; and an examination of the plans and specifications reveals a thoroughly-equipped building, with all necessary department* for dealing with a large supply of milk, etc Departments are- provided for cold storage, churning, pasteurising, testing, and machinery, beside* other necessary conveniences. The usual design for this class of building -will • he followed, with cement floors and sur%es, tho structure itself bcirfg erected in reinforced concrete. Some improvements arc shortly to be P'tt in hand at tho police station, Waihi, ■which will tend to moro convenient ar- ■ rangements. The works include the erection of ii four-roomed station, in wood, and the removal of the old quarters to a new position. NEW BUSINESS PREMISES. ! . TENDERS RECEIVED.
