PROSPERITY OF AUCKLAND.
"WILL BE A SECOND SYDNEY." " There can be no doubt at all that Auckland is in a state of great prosperity, and: is practically running away from the Southern cities." Thus spoke Sir. W. Scott, who has jUst returned to Dunedin from Auckland, to a reporter. Ho states that an enormous amount of building is in progress, as well as large drainage works, and that a very large number of men are being employed in fact, Auckland is the busiest town in New Zealand. Great extensions are being made in the wharf accommodation, which should bo completed in the course of the next 12 months. A lot of money is being spent on the wharves, great..use being made of ferroconcrete in the structures under erection. "Auckland," continued Mr. Scott, "is going to bo a second Sydney." - He said it appeared to him that Auckland had a better future before her than any of the other cities in New Zealand, on account of its climate, its mineral resources, its island trade, and the enormous amount of native lands which were being opened up for settlement.
