THE CRICKET MATCHES.

AUSTRALIANS AT OXFORD.

FIRST INNINGS SCORE OF 23&

OXFORD LOSES FIVE FOR 4& By TeJejnph.—Prosa Association.—Copyrljfit* London, May 23. The Australian cricketers commenced a match against Oxford University at Oxford to-day. The wicket was slow and in favour of the bowlers, while the start of the match was delayed for some time owing to the weather conditions. The weather was cold and cheerless, and the attendance was only about 1000. The Australian team was as follows: Gregory, Jennings, Emory, Macartney, Smith, Bardfllcy, Minnetfc, Kelleway, Hazlitt, Whitty, and Carkeek. Gregory won the toss, and decided to make first use of the wicket, opening with Jennings and Smith to the bowling of Vidler and Kayo. :: , The Australians made a poor opening, the first wicket falling for seven, Jennings being out lbw to Kaye in the second over. : Smith gave an easy catch at cover-point after making two. Macartney showed good : off-driving in making 21, but lost his wicket in playing forward to Vidler. Minnett was run out nest over, owing to Bardsley making a foolish call. Crcitchley accounted for Kelleway with a high single-handed catch. Five wickets had. then fallen . for 51, runs, after 55 minutes' play. The bowling was steady and the fielding smart. Bardsley and Gregory stopped the rot, and ran the total to 161 before Gregory succumbed to Naumann for 42, after being 95 minutes at the wicket. Emery joined Bardsley, and drove finely to the on, hitting 17 off one of Lord's overs before he was taken at third man by Coleman off Crutchley for 33. Hazlitt was caught at slip without scoring, and Bardsley was then given out lbw to Crujjchley. He played admirable all- . round cricket for 160 minutes, and hit 10 fours. He gave a chance to Naumann off Kaye at 61. Carkeek was easily caught at third man. and the. innings closed for 236, made in 220 minutes. In the hour remaining for play Oxford lost five wickets for 45, runs. The bowling was deadly, and Hands (17) was the only man to make a stand. Vidler succumbed first ball, and the last two wickets did not add a single run. , > The following are the scores:— -/ : i : ■ ''■'.
