POLICE COURT NEWS.
STOLEN SACKS.
: The theft of 50 sacks from A. S. Patterson resulted in Ernest Peachey appearing before Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., at the Police Court yesterday. Accused, who admitted the theft, was fined £2, and was ordered to repay the value of the sacks. The man's wife had stated that her husband's trouble was drink, and His Worship accordingly ordered a prohibition order to be made against him. SIX MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT. John Thomasen, alias Braithwaite, convicted of stealing a watch and chain, was sentenced to six months' hard labour. A woman deposed that she saw accused take the vest containing the watch and chain, and put it under his own coat, but neither the vest . nor the articles were found on accused. DRUNKENNESS. For a breach of his prohibition order, John McNaughton was mulcted in tho usual £2 and costs. Win. Joss, who consented to the imposition of a prohibition order, was convicted and discharged. A first offender, a sailor from 11.M.5. Pioneer, was handed over to the ship's officers for punishment. MISCELLANEOUS. A thick-set man, William Scott Carroll, who was found illegally on premises in High-street, was sentenced to 14 days' hard labour. The charge against Thomas Gilbert, of cruelty to a horse, by allowing it to live with a disjointed leg, was dismissed. Henry Morgan, who omitted to supply the requisite notice concerning the erection of certain scaffolding, was fined 10s, with costs. Herbert Butler, who was charged that; he intended leaving New Zealand without making the necessary provision for his wife, was remanded to appear at Dannevirke en Juno.l.
