Sir Charles Assheton-Smith, tho owner of the Grand National winner, is a prominent Welsh landowner and a sportsman whose luck at Liverpool races has become proverbial. For many years ho was known to the racing public as Mr. Charles Duff, his present name being taken on inheriting the famous Vaynol estate, with its huge slate quarries, near Bangor. Besides winning the Grand National twice, with Cloister and Jerry M. Sir Charles has been twice second in the great steeplechase ; he has won the Grand Sefton no fewer than four times, the Valentine.twice, the Stanley once.
