— , «», . —._ [from otjb own cobeespondbstt.] London, April 18. The Earl of Seafield has gone to the West Indies. Meanwhile Lady Seafield is spending a faw weeka in the South of France. Mr. George F. Court and Mr. Joseph F. Walker, J.P., are two New Colanders who have just been elected Fellows of the Royal Colonial Institute. Lady Stout is still devoting a good deal of time to public speaking. She was addressing a meeting at Ipswich a week ago, and next week, at Chelsea, sho will speak on the recent legislation in New Zealand for the protection of girls. For the occasion Mrs. Meeson Coates has lent her studio. Mr. .and Mrs. J. S. Bond (Hamilton) have gone to stay at Edmond 'Castle, near Carlisle, with Mrs. Bond's.mother. It is probable that the return voyage to New , Zealand will be begun in July. Meanwhile Mr. Bond, who is interested in municipal and harbour matters, will take the opportunity of inquiring into methods here. ; , '..., ~.,.. It will be gratifying news to the friends of Miss Adelaide Van Staveren, of Wellington, to hear that that young lady has been offered an engagement to sing twice at Cdvcnt Garden, early during the coming grand; opera season. . 'Naturally she has accepted the .offer, and she will be heard in "Carmen." Miss Van Staveren has been studying singing on the Continent fcr eomo considerable time. . Mr. 0. Wray Palliser has returned to his duties at Victoria-street after a month's .stay at Florence, whither ho went to be with his younger daughter, Miss Eileen Palliser, who has been laid up with a serious attack of diphtheria, Miss, Palliser lias now gone to be with the patient, wljo is being nursed at the Convent Sanatorium, a few miles outside of Florence. Her progress lias not been so rapid as could have boon wished. Before coming away Mr. Palliser engaged the services of an English specialist to assist the local doctor. ' Miss Eileen Palliser has bean for some months on the Continent. Only two days have ;>as3ed since the despatch of the first instalment of the San hranmco mail, yet since then the following new arrivals have added their names to the callers list at tho New Zealand Government Office ---Mr. L. H. Bach (Auckland), Mr. and Mrs. H. Bach, Mrs. H. B' Morton (Auckland), Miss Dunbar (South canterbury), Messrs. W. and J. A. Dunbar, the. .Little (Dunedin), Mr. R. P. Roberts (Christchurch) and two sons, Mrs*. Robert Hay (Dunedin) and the Misses A. and D. Hay, the Misses Rutherford (Wellington), Dr. P. llackin (Wellington), Mr. ... W.'J. Farmer (Wellington), Mrs. Satchell (Nelson) and Miss Sibyl Satchell.
