A POOR SHOOTING SEASON.
THE WORST FOR MANY YEARS.
SPORTSMEN DISGUSTED.
The shooting season, which opened on) Wednesday, has not. up to the present been productive of very good bags. Several Auckland sportsmen returned yesterday, and report that the birds appear to be very scarce. One well-known sportsman, who has been out with the gun during the past 25 years, did not secure a single bird on the opening day. One party was i>uccesful in shooting 25 brace, but, taken all round, the bags were very poor. A Herald reporter was informed by one gentleman, who returned from the Waikato last night, that tho season is one of the worst known for a number of years, and sportsmen are thoroughly disgusted. He also said that the heavy rain lately had made things unpleasant for the sportsmen, while Lake Waikarcmoana had risen several feet above its normal height, and tho Waikato River was also running very high.
