SOME NEW YORK ROMANCING. CONSPIRACY OF SILENCE. MR. TAFT AND MR. ISMAY. New York, April 18. ' The New York newspapers print stories, purporting to be the latest wireless telegrams from the Carpathia (the Cunarder which carries the survivors), stating that the Titanic buckled . amidships ~ after striking the iceberg. Many ladies in their evening gowns were bundled into the boats, not believing there was any danger. When the real danger was apprehended, however, a panic ensued. Scores of injured persons are reported to be aboard the Carpathia. Many of them have been rendered nearly insane by the ordeaL New York is mystified at the silence of the Carpathia. Even the request of President Taft for information was not answered. United States warships were sent to obtain news of the Carpathia, but were unable to secure any reply.' The Navy Department believes that orders have been given for the Carpathia not to answer any queries. Mr.. Joseph Bruce Ismay, chairman
and managing director of the White Star line, who is supposed _to be among the survivors, is believed to have used his influence to prevent the transmission .of news. Owing to heavy fog the Carpathia had to reduce her speed. She is expected to dock about one o'clock to-morrow morning. The steamer La Bretagne reports the presence of huge icebergs in the North Atlantic. Forty bears were seen clinging to the surface of one of the icebergs. Pathetic scenes continue outside the New York offices of the White Star line.. St. John (N.), April 18. The Allan liner Carthaginian has arrived here. She lay. for two days in a thick fog off Cape Race. > ■ • The Carthaginian's wireless intercepted bulletins regarding the disaster to the Titanic, but no details were given. Halifax (Nova Scotia), April 18. The Parisian has arrived here. The captain reports that he has' received no news of the Titanic, except a second-hand call for help.
