DRAUGHTS.

NOTE. Mr. W. 'Adams ha* pointed out. oat two ' errors were made in the setting-up of problem No. 1673. There should be a king, on 23 in place of a man; also, the board should bo reversed. We shall therefore defer publishing the solution for one week. . • PROBLEM No. 1674. ; ', (By Mil. HORSPALii, Birstall.)'

. , Whitb. A fine example of the " glocum " type of problems.— the Family Herald. t . GAMES. '' - Played by Captain Cook v. F. Hopewell. Cook's move. Mr. Hopewell says:—" This week we encountered <m old Wylie "line in an offhand game that taxed our resources to the utmost to demolish. Wo would appreciate playshowing White's strongest attack against B—ll (at note a), which is considered weak." j

(a) This .is generally condemned, and 6—9 is held to be necessary. How is it to be beaten? (b) This is a variation - from the - play in. our .manuscript, where we find the following interest, ing game < ,

• • ' • (1). -v i;: * 6—lo , 22—18 8-11 31-27 11-18 27—23 14- 4- 8 24-19 1— 5 25-' T 13-17 3—lo 2&—23 5— 9 18—15.. . 2-11 [ , Drawn ' Battersby r. Browne,-1904, Scottish. J (c) 11—15 may draw here; it seems Black's last hope.—San I'rancisco Poet. . . \ NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP. WON BY. HILLIKER. . , The tournament to determine . the championship of New Zealand was bought to, a close on Friday, April 12, when F. K.' Milliter (BunedinJ won the championship • from •J. E. Ctilderwood. (Huntly) on percentage count. ' Each player scored 26 points. Boreham (Dunedin) was tnird, with 22i points. J. Legjntt (Wellington), 22 points (liandioap three), . won the. handicap tourney. C. Reid. (Wellington), 15$ ; points (handicap nine), was second, and Chann (Taranafci) 14 points (handicap 10) was third. The priie-money amounted to more . than £40. ENGLISH CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY We learn from tho Yorkshire Observer Budget that this event was timed to take place at the Institute of Journalists, London, during' Easter week, play commencing on Easter Monday. There were to be three sittings per day,' viz.,> from 10 to 1," 2 to .5, ..and 6.- to 10. . The tourney ' was to be played on the " all-round" system, two games to bo- played in each heat, counting one point for a win and one-half, point for a draw. The tourney was open to any ( player ' who had been a bona-fide resident in England for .the preceding 12 months;. but the executive reserved the power to reject any entry where the player, in, their opinion, was not first-class. The entrance fee. was £1, payable one > week before the tourney commenced. A big , entry was anticipated, but it was stated' that Alfred Jordan, who has won the championship three times in succession, would not compete this year. ■ • MR. BOREHAM'S LETTER. \ In .reference to our published quotations from .the' above, Mr. Edward Jblins,. Hon. secretary to tho committee who had the conduct of the draught's"'championship "tournament held in' Auckland two years ago, writes under date April 17 08 follows" Re Mr. Boreham's statement that four players • at the . Auckland tourney ■ decided that the championship should be held by a North Island player, .it is not true. .The players were paired by, ballot, in each round; and, . also, the players from each district played between themselves before they met those from ; another s district. Why did not Mr. Borehani complain at the time? It is" certain neither the referee nor the committee anything about it ; until his letter appeared in the Otago Witness two years after the tourney was held. It is true lie claimed tho game from one opponent because he refused to start another' game within 20 minutes of .the timp for, adjourning, but the referee ruled against him, and on his appealing >to the committee they upheld the decision of the ' referee, and at 'no . time - awarded him the game, but re- j quested him to go in and play the game, which ho did. - For, the good of the game, the knock, out is a failure very difficult to deal with, very uncertain in its working, and very unfair to the players, especially so, when they do as they, did in the last Scotch championship, when Scott and O'Connor, in the first round,' had . played 10 draws, they counted : O'Connor out • and when Scott and Jordan, had played 14 games with one win each and 12 draws, they balloted Scott out. Fancy two men or two horses running a deadliest and ■ the committee balloting who should bo the winner 1 In conclusion, I would, add that during the championship tourney,/ held la Auckland the only player that gave the referee or committee any trouble was Mr. Boreham."
