A CHAPTER FROM THE PAST
PRIME MINISTER'S FEAT. When Mr. J. A. Tripe, Acting-Japanese Consul in Wellington, met tho new Prime Minister (the Hon. T. Mackenzie) at a recent function in the Cabinet room, the former remarked that tho last time ho had met Mr. Mackenzie was on an occasion many years ago, when Mr. Mackenzie and a companion wero instrumental in saving the lives of himself and two others on a rough clay in Wellington Harbour-
When the incident was mentioned, the Prima Minister readily recalled all the circumstances. Ho was bathing in the Thorndon baths with the Hon. W. P. Reeves when a lad brought word that a boat out in the harbour was swamped and its occupants were in danger. The two politicians hastily donned their clothes, and with Mini© difficulty obtained a dinghy and went to the rescue. One of the three distressed boating men was nearly exhausted, and him they managed to get into the dinghy, while the other two clung to the little craft, and Messrs. Mackenzie and Reeves pulled them all into safety. " It is pleasant to be reminded of those old bygone days," said Mr. Mackenzie. "Of course, there was nothing out of the way about the incident, bub the littledinghy took some handling on those big seas."
