Mr. Wesley Spragg was a passenger by the Main Trunk express which left for Wellington last evening. Dr L. Plimpton, of Boston, returned to Auckland from Rotoma yesterday, and is staying at the- Grand Hotel. Th 9 Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) left Gisborno for Napier last evening, the Supreme Court sessions in Gisborno having concluded. Mr. B. R. Martin, Opposition organiser, arrived by the Main Trunk express; from Wellington yesterday, and is staying at the Royal Hotel. Comte Flcurieu, who has been on a visit to Auckland for the past (fortnight, left for Wellington by the Main Trunk express last night. Mr. G. J. Garland returned from Wellington yesterday morning alter successfully transacting business for the Grey Lynn Borough Council. Mr, A. Gollan, of Lo--Jon. is at present on a visit to Auckland. Mr. Gollan has been touring in the South, and arrived yesterday from Rotoma. Major-General Godley (General Officer Commanding the New Zealand Forces), and his staff left last by the Main Trunk express for Wellington.

Dr. Gordon, of Ceylon, who has been on an extended visit to tho Hot Lakes district, arrived in Auckland from Rotoma yesterday afternoon, and it staying at the Royal Hotel

Prior to his departure for Sydney, Mr. J. Blakey (lato hon. treasurer of the. North Shore Rowing Club) was presented by the president (Mr. McLean), on behalf of tho club, with a handsome case of silvermounted pipes, suitably inscribed.

The following delegates arrived in town yesterday, to take pari in tho merchants' conference, which opens here to-day: — Messrs. N. C. Reed, W. A. Mowbray, H. A. Gow, Welling;-m; J. J. Royds and H. C. Godfrey, Christchurch; and Win. R. Gordon, Dunedin.

The Earl of Morton and party left Rotoma yesterday for Taupo, and proceed to Tokaanu to-day, where they stay for a few days' fishing. On Wednesday next they start from their fishing camp to travel down the Wanganui River, and on Saturday ' they are due at Featherston where the earl "intends to do some deer shooting.

- Mr. C. Briggs,. of Mount Morgan, Queensland, who is a delegate to the Conference of the Australasian Provincial Press Association, which has just sat in Auckland, received a cable message yesterday asking him to stand as an Independent candidate for the Norinanby electorate, in the general elections which will take place on April 27.

Mr. W. G. Somerville, of Dunedin, a vice-president of < the Australasian Provincial Press Association, who has distinguished himself by much excellent work on behalf,-of the association, and especially on this occasion by arranging an excellent itinerary for their travels in ■New Zealand, was yesterday presented by the delegates with a silver-mounted saladbowl. Mr. S. W. Brookes, the retiring president, made the presentation, and the excellent "work and energy of Mr. Somerville were referred to by him and by other delegates. , Mr. Spmerville suitably replied. -*ii*•*«»«♦'*. -.

Mr. G. Ross, who has for many years been in the employment of the Northern Steamship Company, and is well known to travellers by the fine as chief steward of the 8.3. Ngapuhi, has recently been promoted; to-the position of shore providorc. Yesterday morning his ship-mates on the Ngapuhi made him a handsome present in the form of a massive gold watch chain and pendant as a token of the goodwill of the snip's company and their regret at the severance of what had been for so long a much-appreciated association. Mr. M. G. Harvey, the chief engineer, who made the presentation, neatly expressed the opinions of the officers and crew of the ship with regard to Mr. Ross, and Captain E.Stephenson heartily endorsed his state- I ments and congratulated their comrade \ upon his promotion. Mr. Ross feelingly re- j sponded.
