MEETINGS.

OBSERVANCE OF SUNDAY.

A meeting was held in the Orange Hall, Karangahape Road, last night, in connection with the observance of the Sabbath. The gathering was addressed by Mr. David Nield, of Wellington. He quoted the Bible to show that the Ten Commandments entailed a perpetual obligation. The observance of the Sabbath was, ho added, for all created beings, because it is the everlasting memorial of the six days' work of creation.

ELLESLIE TOWN BOARD. The fortnightly meeting of tho Ellerslic Town Bonrd took place on Tuesday night, when there were present Messrs. Geo. Wilkinson (ehairmari), A. Hill, and W. H. Gavin. Tho following resolutions of the Works Committee were adopted : "(a) That* the Board agrees to the conditions drawn* up at the conference of local bodies for tho improved conditions and increased wages to labourers employed by local bodies, and that the clerk notify the townclerk of Auckland to that effect; (b) That measurements be taken to reticulate with tho water mains all the new roads formed in the district, and that an estimate be prepared in order to formulate a loan proposal to cover the cost of such work." Tho new drainage proposals were fully discussed, and Messrs. Wilkinson, Gavin, and Ross (clerk) were appointed a committee to interview Mr. J. Lomas, superintendent of workers' homes, in regard to the Government offer to the Board for taking over tho septic tank and sewers thereto, and to ascertain the position the Lawry" settlement lessees will be in, and the benefit that will accrue to them by a reduction in rent equal to the rate to be struck to cover tho interest on tho cost of the drainage scheme. Mr. Oliver Nicholson, as solicitor to the late Mr. Walter Scott, wrote stating that under the will of the deceased, £160 had been left as the nucleus of a fund for the purpose of providing p.. public reading-room for the EN lerslie district, and that lie as executor was empowered to hand over such sum to any authority establishing such read-ing-room. Tho Board appreciated the public spiritedness of the deceased, and it was resolved that the appreciation 'be placed on record, and that the question in regard to authority to administer the triiFl- be discussed in committee. It was resolved that the clerk call for tenders for quarrying stone from the side of Panmure Road and Morrin-street, to improve these thoroughfares. The chairman suggested that tho clerk should write to the chief postmaster and ask if an automatic public telephone box could be sanctioned for use at tho Ellerslio post office entrance as it would prove of great benefit to persons requiring to make urgent night calls. It was resolved that the clerk instruct tho local constablo to stop tho practice of youths congregating on the ramp of tho station bridge, and at Austin's corner, as such practice is an annoyance, and is a violation of the Board's, by-law.

WEST COASTERS' ASSOCIATION. A meeting was held in the Royal Albert Hall last night to consider the formation of a West Coasters' Association. About a dozen West Coasters attended. Mr. A. McClusky was appointed chairman pro tern., and Mr. B. Grogan secretary pro tern. It was decided to form an association. The Wellington West Coasters' Association sent a telegram wishing the new association every good wish and success. All present then formed themselves into a committee, after which the meeting 'was adjourned till Monday.

EDEN TERRACE ROAD BOARD. A meeting of the Eden Terrace Road Board was held last evening, when, there were .present: Mr. G. A. Coles (chairman), W. H. Butler, H. A. Good, and T. W. McLaughlin. A' permit was granted to Mr. W. G. Hutchinson to carry out certain additions and improvements to stables in Eden Terrace. - It was decided that the questions with regard to the Mount Eden tunnel drain that had been raised, should be dealt with at a special meeting of the Board, to be held on next Tuesday evening; at 7.15 o'clock. The chairman reported that the schedule of wages, as agreed to by the conference of local bodies, had been confirmed, and the Board would commence payment of wages on the new scale' as from the first of next month. Mr. R. Creagh, the Board's engineer, reported that, Mr. Muuroe Wilson would have the plans in connection with the proposed drainage scheme— which a loan of £5500 is to be raised—ready in a few weeks' time.
