A 100 yds inter-club handicap at. a carnival I)eld by tho North Sydney Club a few days ago, was responsible for some excellent swimming. A. W. Barry, from scratch, was beaten by E. Chounding (North Sydney), on 155., by about 6in, and as the winner did lm. 11 4-55., it moans that the young Sydnoyite must have, dono about 575. for the distanoe, as 56 4-6s. would have made a dead-heat. In the ninth heat Alick Wickham, on tlio second, caught his field 15yds from tho finish, and contented himself by " paddling" home. However, despite this, lie did 53 4-ss. Hardwick won in similar fashion in 595., ant} S. C. Wright secured first place in tho 13th heat in 60 2-ss. In the semi-final Hardwick (scratch), Wickham (Is.), and Wright (25.) met, and Wickham won in the excellent time of 56 4-55., which equals tho Australasian record. With but a short spell, he also won the final in 60 l-ss. L. Murray and Wright both did 60s. in their relays of tho teams' race, so that, all round, the afternoon's sport was responsible for some excellent work. Commenting on these performances, a Sydney writer refers particularly to A. W. Barry, who visited Auckland with the Sydney team some weeks ago. If tho 100 yds championship of tho State were contested now, instead of last January, he remarks, both Wickham and Barry would find as many supporters as Longworth and Hardwick. tho heroes of the splendid struggle in this event, when the Australasian record was put tip. Wickham has never shown such good form as at present, notwithstanding that ho has appeared before the public since 1902. Although Barry has been a consistent performer for a few years, he never approached his present, figures. Wickham's improvement is probably due to the 200 yds and 300vds training work ho bus put" ii» for the Olympic test, and the consequent development of staying powers. He always possessed the necessary pace, but often failed to see the distance out. Barry's success is but. tho forerunner of much better work, and the writer docs not hesitate to forecast a win for Barry in the State and Australian sprint championships of the near future.
