SHOOTING AT TRENTHAM

PHENOMENAL SCORING. MANY POSSIBLES REGISTERED. ELLIOTT.' TAKES CARBINE CUP. , . > [BT TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] ' (■ ". Then-thaw, Tuesday. Tub weather was fine overhead when shooting started at Trentham this morning. Tho. close, muggy heat, . however, made matters rather uncomfortable at times. Shooting opened with the Canterbury 'Match, 10 shots at 600 yds, and although several of the marksmen complained of the mirage Henderson (lato of tho Bisley team) and Ryder (of the 9tli Regiment) managed to find the bull's-eyes with all their shots, while "all-buta" were made by Sargeant, of Wellington, and Brinsley, of Wanganui. Six marksmen also got 48, and to show how good tho shooting was 45's were counted" out. In tho Otago Match at 600 yds, 10 shots, tho shooting can only bo classed as phenomenal. The weather did not assist the shooting much, as there was a bad drift across tho range, but not enough to disturb the flag. Several men got possibles, and had to divide the first seven prizes. There wero ' seven 4!)'s, and as marking tho excellence of tho shooting 47's, only three points off the- possible, wero counted out of tho prize list. The Trentham Aggregate Match at 300 yds, 500 yds, and 600 yds, was won by Elliott, the brilliant young Aucklander, with 329. Atkinson, of Auckland, who put up tho highest score at these ranges, had omitted to enter for tho Trentham Aggregate Match, and by his oversight loses the first prize of £5, and the Carbine Cup, which goes to Elliott.

After lunch the Nelson Match, 10 shots at 800 yds and 900 yds, was taken again. Thero was a puffy wind, which spoiled some scores. At 800 yds a possible was put up by L. l/oveday, of Woodville, who shot so brilliantly at Bisley, where he represented New Zealand in the Prince of Wales's prize, as well as in the Kolaporo Cup. Loveday is hardly yet 21 years of age, and -hits British and Australian victories to his credit. Other possibles were made by Marshall (Karori), Faulkner (Wellington), and Willoughby (Petone). W. Cox, another member of the Bisley team, put up 49 at 600 yds. Cox duplicated his total, and won the match, Loveday getting 47, which placed him ,in second position, with 97. Atkinson, the leader in the aggregate, only got 92, and at -the close of the match he and Loveday were tying in the aggregate.

To-morrow will conclude the belt matches, with the exception of the King's prize. . The Champion Teams' Match and United Service Match will be fired in the afternoon.
