KINDERGARTEN WORK.
TRAINING OF THE YOUNG
DIPLOMAS;' FOR STUDENTS.
- The annual meeting •' of . the Auckland - Kindergarten Association was held yesterr day afternoon in the Training College. . Dr. McDowell presided, and among those t present was( Her Excellency, Lady Isling- - ton, patroness ;of the association. There 1 were also on the platform Mr. G. J. [• Garland (chairman of the Education Board), Mr. E. K. Mulgan (chief inspector), Mr. >H. A. Milnes (principal (of;the' Training i College), and the Hon. (Geo. 3 Fowlds.- , J Dr. McDowell, in opening meeting, s welcomed Lady Islington; on behalf of the > association. • .-The annual; reports and balance-sheet - were then read (and;, adopted. Receipts p during the (year'amounted to £505, arid I there, was a credit balanced of £226, 13s, > Winch was £50 in advance, of the credit balance at. the end of : the previous year. > The year's work had produced excellent > results, and,in the reports of the Depart- j > ment-'s inspectors was (very; favourably I > commented on. Miss Gibson, who has > now the supervision of all the , branches, was ■ congratulated upon her splendid 1 management. ;The council appealed for a • large addition to( the number of annual subschibers" and donors, with the view of their taking steps to increase - the usefulness of the association by ■ the opening 'of another free kindergarten. The practical work of the students .in" the three kinder- j gartens under • the association, viz., the Remuera, the• Epsom, and the (Campbell Free Kindergarten, undoubtedly formed a most valuable part of ; their training as they were enabled to put their theories into practice under - the supervision of trained and experienced teachers., . .' Dr. McDowell, in * moving the adoption of the reports, made -a few interesting comments upon the work ; done!" ; The association had survived the troubles that were incidental to a new movement, and the fruit that, had come from Sir John Campbell's gift \ was already very manifest indeed. . Kindergarten work was a most admirable (f means i' : l of inculcating knowledge into the young mind. At the foundation of (kindergarten; work there was the desire, not so much for the training of , the mind, as for the building of character.; They could not begin too young, in the training of the children. (Applause)!' < ' .;. '■- Several; other addresses on( the value of kindergarten : work were delivered.; Mr. G.■■;J. Garland seconded;the adoption or the report, and ; interesting • * papers were read by - Miss Gibson, Miss Brooke-Smith, and Mrs. Leo. Myers. ' , Lady Islington then ; presented ; the council's ■'■•diplomas to the , following students, who had satisfactorily completed tehir course -.—Misses M. Bakewell, H. Kingswell, (J;- Robertson, M. Bartlett, E. Miller, N. Russell, .E. Cottrell, E. Moore, : C. Prosser. Her Excellency congratulated • the students (upon the success they had ( attained, and , expressed . her. sympathy i ' with the aims of kindergarten work, and her earnest wish to help as ; far as/lay in ■ her; power. ' ■.. . .'., * : . Lady Islington was accorded a hearty ( vote of thanks for her attendance, •on the motion of Mr. - Milnes..
